What Is PaleRa1n Jailbreak?

PaleRa1n is a modern jailbreak tool based on the Checkm8 exploit, the same hardware-based exploit used by checkra1n. Because Checkm8 targets the bootrom, Apple cannot patch it with software updates.

This makes PaleRa1n extremely powerful—but also limited to specific devices.

PaleRa1n is mainly designed for iOS 15 and later, filling the gap left by older jailbreak tools that stopped working on newer iOS versions.

Supported Devices & iOS Versions

Supported iPhones

Devices newer than iPhone X are not supported, including:

  • iPhone XS / XS Max
  • iPhone 11 series
  • iPhone 12 series
  • iPhone 13 series
  • iPhone 14 series
  • all other newer models

Supported iOS Versions

PaleRa1n works on:

  • iOS 15.0 and higher
  • If your device is running iOS 14 or lower, PaleRa1n will not work.

Important Warnings Before You Start

Before proceeding, there are some very important things you need to understand:

If you ignore these warnings, the jailbreak may fail or your device may boot into stock iOS.

What You Need Before Jailbreaking

  • A supported iPhone
  • macOS or Linux computer
  • USB cable
  • At least 10GB free storage on iPhone
  • Python 3 installed
  • Tips app installed on iPhone

After jailbreaking, the Tips app will be replaced by the PaleRa1n loader.

Why macOS or Linux Is Required

PaleRa1n does not work on Windows.

Virtual machines are also unreliable, and dual-booting Linux is the only workaround for Windows users.

Additionally, Linux users with AMD Ryzen CPUs may face issues. Intel-based systems are recommended.

Installing Python 3

Python 3 is required to run PaleRa1n.

On macOS, Python is often pre-installed. You can check by typing:

python3 --version

If Python is not installed, download and install Python 3 before continuing.

Cloning the PaleRa1n Repository

Open Terminal and run the following command:

git clone --recursive https://github.com/palera1n/palera1n

Once cloning is complete, navigate to the directory:

cd palera1n

Make sure the letter “l” in palera1n is a lowercase L, not an uppercase I.

Understanding Semi-Tethered Mode

PaleRa1n supports both tethered and semi-tethered jailbreak modes.

Semi-Tethered Mode

  • Uses 5–10GB of storage
  • Allows rebooting without a computer
  • Not supported on 16GB iPhones

If your iPhone has only 16GB storage, you must use tethered mode.

How to Put iPhone into DFU Mode

DFU mode is required for PaleRa1n to work.

For iPhone 7:

  • Hold Power + Volume Down
  • Wait until screen goes black
  • Release Power after 5 seconds
  • Keep holding Volume Down for 5–7 seconds

If you see a cable or computer icon, you are in recovery mode, not DFU.

Step-by-Step PaleRa1n Jailbreak Process

Once your device is in DFU mode, run the following command:

./palera1n -i 15.7.1 --semi-tethered

Replace 15.7.1 with your actual iOS version.

Linux users must add sudo at the beginning.

If you encounter errors, reboot and repeat the DFU steps.

Completing the Jailbreak on iPhone

Once the process completes, your iPhone will boot into iOS.

You will see the PaleRa1n app on the home screen.

Open it and select:

  • Do All
  • Install
  • Respring

Using Sileo After Jailbreak

After respring, you’ll see Sileo installed.

Sileo is the modern package manager replacing Cydia and allows you to install jailbreak tweaks.

Tweak Compatibility on iOS 15 & 16

Not all tweaks are compatible with newer iOS versions.

Always check tweak compatibility lists before installing anything to avoid boot loops.

Limitations of PaleRa1n Jailbreak

  • No passcode on A10/A11 devices
  • Semi-tethered nature
  • No support for newer iPhones

Despite these limitations, PaleRa1n remains the best option for supported devices.

How to Remove PaleRa1n Jailbreak

You can remove PaleRa1n by restoring your device using Finder or iTunes.

A detailed removal guide will be covered in a separate tutorial.

Final Thoughts

PaleRa1n is a powerful jailbreak solution for iOS 15 and iOS 16.2 on older iPhones.

While the process may seem complicated, following the steps carefully makes it manageable even for beginners.

Palera1n Jailbreak - How to Jailbreak iOS 15.0 to iOS 16.2 - Full Step-by-Step Guide - Compatible devices - Requirements

Hi, in this video I am going to show you how to JAILBREAK iOS 15 and iOS 16, yes its been a while since we heard this line but its true and its reality now! This tutorial is about the Palera1n jailbreak. If you have checked the website of palera1n, or the GitHub page or the Written Guide, you might find it really complicated! So, iMAT is here for you.

If you want to watch the full video tutorial, you can find it in the end of the post. Also, subscribe to my new YouTube Channel which I have made specially for all my Jailbreak and iOS content viewers to find my Jailbreak Related videos easily!

What is Palera1n:

Palera1n is a semi-tethered jailbreak which is based on the checkm8 boot-rom exploit.

Which devices are supported:

It supports all devices which can run iOS 15 and iOS 16 with A11 or lower chip!

It includes:

  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE 1st Generation
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X
And all iPads with A11 or lower chip running iOS 15.0 to iOS 16.2!

Passcode Compatibility:

On A10 and A11 devices, you cannot use passcode, Face ID and Fingerprint while in jailbroken mode. And an attempt to add passcode while in jailbroken mode will result in crash and restart! And if you are running iOS 16 and if you ever used a passcode on your device, then just removing the passcode will not work for you. You will have to reset your device either from the settings or by using iTunes.

Which operating systems are supported?
  • macOS
  • Linux
Windows is not supported. Also, using Linux or macOS on Virtual Machine will not work!

Any requirement before starting:
  • Python 3
If you have not installed it yet, click the download button below to visit the Python website and download Python3.

FOR MACOS

FOR LINUX

Now everything is set, let's start!

  • Open terminal on your Mac or Linux PC.
The step 1 and step 2 mentioned below are only for LINUX. They are not needed on macOS
  1. Run sudo systemctl stop usbmuxd
  2. Run usbmuxd -f -p
Now let's continue the process. Rest of the process is same for Linux and MacOS!
  • Clone the repo from Github by pasting the command given below in TERMINAL.
git clone --recursive https://github.com/palera1n/palera1n && cd palera1n
  • And if you have already cloned the repo, then you don't need to do it again. So, just navigate to the palera1n folder from terminal by pasting the command given below.
For macOS: cd palera1n

For Linux: cd palera1n\
  • Now put your device in DFU mode before going to the next step!
  • Once you are in the palera1n directory and your device is in DFU mode, paste the command given below to start the process. MUST READ THE INFORMATION GIVEN BELOW IN RED BEFORE STARTING!
For macOS: ./palera1n.sh --tweaks <iOS version you're on> --semi-tethered

For Linux: sudo ./palera1n.sh --tweaks <iOS version you're on> --semi-tethered

where,
  • <iOS version you're on> = The iOS version your device is running. In my case, its iOS 15.7.1
  • --semi-tethered flag = to make the jailbreak semi-tethered.
  • Semi-Tethered: When you're in jailbroken mode, if your device restarts or shuts down, you will boot into non-jaikbroken mode and you can still use your device but it will be in stock iOS mode and your jailbreak apps and tweaks will not work.
  • Not using --semi-tethered flag = If you will not use semi-tethered flag, the jailbreak will be tethered.
  • Tethered: When you're in jailbroken mode, if your device restarts or shuts down, your device will not turn on without using palera1n again. Your device will need to be jailbroken again from palera1n to turn it on again.
  • Can I use --semi-tethered flag: --semi-tethered flag uses 5-10GB space and it can be used on all devices except the devices with 16GB storage or less than 10GB space free on the device.

So, if you are using an iDevice with 16GB storage or have less than 10GB storage free in your iPhone, then don't use the --semi-tethered flag. And if you still want to jailbreak, you will have to use tethered jailbreak and if your device goes off, you will have to jailbreak your device every time with palera1n using the terminal on your Mac or Linux PC to turn it on.

  • This is how the command looks like for my iPhone 7, 128GB variant running iOS 15.7.1
For macOS: ./palera1n.sh --tweaks 15.7.1 --semi-tethered
  • After you enter the command on your MacBook or Linux PC, the process will start, and you will see the progress on the terminal.
  • If you see any error, just paste the command and run again.
  • After it finished the Phase 1, your device will turn on in Normal mode. Keep it connected, Terminal will boot your device into Recovery Mode automatically.
  • Once your device is in Recovery Mode, you will have to manually put your device in DFU Mode.
  • Then, terminal will ask your to press any key once your device is in DFU Mode.
  • Press any random key to start.
  • Once terminal detects your device in DFU Mode, it will start the process again.
  • After that your device will turn on once the process finished.
  • Disconnect your iPhone from the Mac or Linux PC.

Finish installing Palera1n Jailbreak:
  • Access the Home Screen on your iPhone where you will find the Palera1n icon.
  • Open Palera1n Loader.
  • Go to settings, and tap on "Do All"
  • Then return to the main screen and press Install.
  • After that, press the button to respring your iPhone.
  • Boom! Now you can use Sileo on your iPhone.
  • If you wish to use Cydia or Zebra, open the Palera1n App. And go to settings! Scroll down and tap on the Package Manager you want to use. In a few seconds, you will have your desired package manager on the home-screen!

Compatible Tweaks:

Currently, not all tweaks are compatible since they need to be updated by the developer. Visit the link given below for tweak compatibility status before installing any tweak!
