🧪 How to Install macOS 26 Tahoe Beta (Developer or Public)

If you’re excited to try macOS 26 Tahoe ahead of its official release, Apple offers both a Developer Beta and a Public Beta via its Beta Software Program. Follow this step-by-step guide to get started.

⚠️ Before You Begin

  • Check Compatibility: macOS 26 supports Macs with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3) and select Intel Macs (typically 2020 or later).
  • Back Up Your Mac: Use Time Machine or your preferred backup method before installing any beta software.
  • Expect Bugs: Betas are not fully stable. Install on a secondary Mac if possible.

🧑‍💻 Option 1: Install macOS 26 Developer Beta

  1. Visit developer.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID linked to your Developer Account.
  2. Navigate to the Downloads section and locate macOS 26 Developer Beta.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to enroll your Mac.
  4. On your Mac, go to System Settings > General > Software Update.
  5. Click the “i” button next to Beta Updates and select macOS 26 Developer Beta.
  6. Return to Software Update and wait for the macOS 26 beta to appear. Click Download and Install.

Note: You may need to restart your Mac once the installation process begins.

🧪 Option 2: Install macOS 26 Public Beta

The Public Beta is expected in July 2025. Here’s how to enroll once available:

  1. Go to beta.apple.com.
  2. Click “Sign Up” or “Sign In” using your Apple ID.
  3. Click “Enroll Your Devices” > Mac.
  4. Follow the instructions to add your Mac to the beta program.
  5. On your Mac, go to System Settings > General > Software Update.
  6. Select the macOS 26 Public Beta from the Beta Updates menu.
  7. Download and install the update.

🔁 Revert to Stable macOS (Optional)

If the beta causes issues, you can downgrade:

  • Boot into macOS Recovery (press Command + R on startup).
  • Use Disk Utility to erase your Mac (optional).
  • Reinstall the latest stable version of macOS.
  • Restore from your Time Machine backup.
